Why may the Preamble (introduction) of the Constitution be important to understanding the direction our nation will take?

It is important to understand the Preamble of the Constitution to know what direction our nation will take because lots of the goals for the nation are outlined here. For example, it talks about establishing justice and peace. These are just a few of the different goals that are outlined to "form a more perfect Union."

I think that it is important to understand the preamble of the constitution because it kind of provides a layout about what the United States wants. It says they want to establish Justice and to ensure domestic tranquility, these are both goals for the new nation.

DeleteI think it's interesting that you mention "for a new nation," as I never really thought of how the Constitution wasn't designed in the context of a well over 200 year old state, but as a very young nation. Not particularly directly related to the prompt, just found it interesting.

The Preamble of the Constitution is important because it gives the basic goals of the United States. For example, "...establish[ing] Justice [and] insur[ing] domestic Tranquility..." It also specifies wanting a "...more perfect Union..." which emphasizes the unity of the states.

The very first line mentions that the people are the ones writing the document, and therefore implies that the people should have power. To form a more perfect union, the Founders argue, the government must establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, etc. Essentially, the Preamble is a roadmap not just for the Constitution, but for America as a whole.

Like a thesis, it provides the reason that the document is being written and what point it should get across. It is saying that the details and rules laid out are meant to give the nation security, peace, liberty, justice, etc.
ReplyDeleteI agree I think a thesis is a good way of looking at it. The document goes into more details later on, but they wanted to establish all of their points and reasons for making the Constitution at the very beginning.

It clearly shows, right at the beginning of the document, the type of republic that they want to create. I also think the first phrase, "We the people" is very important because it establishes how this will be a government ruled by the people.

ReplyDeleteThe importance of the preamble of the Constitution is that it says exactly what the goals and points of this document is, in (somewhat) simple language. It was easy to repeat and read, and as most of the nation could do at least one of those, it helped the american people understand what this would be doing to them. It was also clear so that no one could misinterpret and take advantage of what it was supposed to mean.
I agree and it somewhat foreshadows the details that will be in the Constitution.

ReplyDeleteThe Preamble of the constitution might be important to the understanding of the direction this nation will take, as it shows and states clearly what the constitution was created for, and does not include anything vague, like the unwritten constitution was. The purpose was to set a solid foundation, and express emphasis on liberty, freedom, and justice, which it did, and prevented any misinterpretations or doubt. Essentially, this was all done to prevent what had happened beforehand, with England's unwritten constitution that kept on changing.

ReplyDeleteThe preamble acts as a summary and introduction to the Constitution, and the Constitution acts as the basis of the law and values of the nation, hence by following the logical trail of sorts this leaves one would find that the preamble is a kind of short summary of America's values and law, clearly something very important to understand in that way.
